Course objectives
The course characterizes a wide category of tangible movable and immovable cultural heritage with an emphasis on architectural monuments and artifacts documenting the daily life of society, taking into account the social structure and stages of historical development, including art and artefacts (especially fine arts). It emphasizes the intertwining of the two mentioned modules of material culture, which will be presented using typical and specific examples. Institutions collecting collections / artifacts of tangible cultural heritage, methods of their access, protection and care will be reminded. Territorially, attention is focused on the Czech lands and Central Europe, taking into account the broader context.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, the student will be able to:
- describe a wide category of tangible movable and immovable cultural heritage;
- explain the intertwining of the two mentioned modules of material culture;
- apply the acquired knowledge in practice.

  • 1. Terminology, methodology, sources and literature.
  • 2. The concept of tangible / intangible culture and the basic theory of tangible culture.
  • 3. Typology and basic categorization of tangible immovable cultural heritage.
  • 4. Typology and basic categorization of tangible movable cultural heritage.
  • 5. - 6. Art, phasing of artistic styles, their basic features and documents.
  • 7. Material culture, art and heritage of aristocratic society. Art, architecture and material culture / heritage associated with sovereign / land / state power.
  • 8. Material culture, art and heritage of urban strata, evidence of professional activity.
  • 9. Material culture, art and heritage of rural society, professional activities.
  • 10. Material documents of montane and (therefore) industrial business.
  • 11. Art, architecture and material culture / heritage of religions and churches, manifestations in the liturgy and folk piety.
