Course objectives
One of a term aim of the course is to familiarize students with the basic kinds of stone materials used in prehistoric times and the Middle Ages in Central Europe in terms of petrographic methods, characteristics of materials and their practical application. The course also includes practical training in relevant learning materials.

  • 1 / Introduction (definition petroarchaeology, history of research in Moravia and Silesia as well as in other parts of Central Europe; comparative rock collection - lithotéky)
    2 / Methods used and their characteristics
    3 / List of igneous rocks with respect to their use in prehistoric and medieval times
    4 / Overview of sedimentary rocks with respect to their use in prehistoric and medieval times
    5 / Overview of metamorphic rocks with respect to their use in prehistoric and medieval times
    6 / Raw chipped artifacts in Central Europe
    7 / Raw polished artefacts in Central Europe
    8 / Raw Materials other stone industry and dyes
    9 / The mineral resources Cu, Sn, Au, Ag and Fe in prehistoric times, building stone materials and raw materials for the production of lime, production of ceramics, decorative stones materials for making millstones, whorls, whetstones
    10 / Extraction and movement of stone materials in the Czech Republic and Central Europe from the Paleolithic to the Eneolithic.

Successfully pass the final examination, which may be either written (test) and oral or oral only, but always associated with exploring stone materials (student should be able to recognize about 50 kinds of raw materials)
