Course objectives

The subject centres on archaeological montanistic research in the context of issues connected with the extraction and processing of metals in the Middle Ages and the early modern age. Apart from the history of mining and an overview of the main iron ore areas in Europe and the Czech Republic, it will cover technological procedures employed in the mining and production of ferrous and non-ferrous metals including the material culture of placer mining, mining and metallurgical sites. Attention will be also devoted to the economic, social, historical and legal aspects of mining including its impact on the transformation of settlement structures, trade and business activities and the environment.

Syllabus

• 1. Montanistic research- history and the present state of research, methodology, sources, literature.
  2. Historical and legal aspects of mining activities, colonization, mining settlements and towns, cultural identity of miners.
  3. Sources of metals and the main iron ore areas in Europe and the Czech Republic.
  4. Mining and processing of iron ores (mining, smelting and metallurgical operations).
  5. Exploitation of polymetallic ores (placer mining, mining and preparation facilities).
  6. Production technologies and innovations connected with the production and processing of metals, related material finds (semi-finished products, tools, technical ceramics).
  7. Infrastructure of the processing facilities (smelting, smithering, girdling, jewellery-making, minting, assaying).
  8. Extraction and use of metals in prehistory and the early Middle Ages (deposits, exchange of goods, trade routes).
  9. Production and processing of ferrous and non-ferrous metals in the Middle Ages and the early modern age.
  10. Economic and social aspects of mining activities, mining and trade companies.
  11. Archaeological evidence of mining activities, their impact on the landscape and the environment.
  12. Protection of montanistic monuments, discovery trails, mining museums and exhibitions, experiments.
