Course objectives

The main aim of the course is to introduce students the basis of agricultural development of agricultural cultures from prehistoric to medieval times. On a broader scale, students will become familiar with the current issues (preserved relevant sources in the context of current scientific knowledge). Emphasis will be on the conclusions and results of completed experiments in archeology, relating to agriculture.

  3. Theoretical Excursion II. - Eneolit and Prehistory - the onset of ploughing
  4. Theoretical Excursion III. - The Middle Ages and the colonization of new positions
  5. Historical sources - Iconography, written historical instructions, folk traditions
  6. Man and landscape I. - Management of forest, slash-and-burn process
  7. Man and the Landscape II. - Transformation of i fields, lay farming and cyclical management
  8. Material sources I. - Immovable (Celtic fields, deserted medieval ?eld)
  9. Material sources II. - Movable (ards, ploughs, ploughshare)
  10. The role of the experiment in archeology
  11. Multi-disciplinary approach, possible benefits to knowledge of the issues
  12. Interpretation of the results
  13. Final test
