Course objectives
The aim of the course is to outline the fundamental tendencies in world literature, or selected national literatures such as Anglo-American, French, Russian, German or Latin American, from the pre-Romantic period up until aesthetic postmodernity. The course traces key trends but also broader aesthetic, generic or discursive tendencies of the given periods and epochs.
Learning outcomes
Students will a have a good overview of the more recent developments in world literature and will be able to think, talk and write about it in a contextual manner. The main instruments will be independent reading as well as knowledge drawn from the individual lectures of the course.

Naturalism (E. Zola and Tain determinism) 5. Modern. Currents of the second half of the 19th century (impressionism, symbolism and the concept of fin de siècle 6. Avant-garde and its manifestations I. (expressionism, futurism, cubism and cubofuturism) 7. Avant-garde and its manifestations II. (dada and surrealism) 8. Prose between the two world wars I .: prose written in English (modernism, Bloomsbury aesthetics, "lost generation") 9. Prose between the two world wars II .: German prose written (German bourgeois culture, German Jewish and non-Jewish works in the Czech lands) 10. Zkušební okruhy: 1) Umělecké a myšlenkové koncepce 18. století (filozofické a beletristické dílo Voltairovo, význam encyklopedistů, specifické postupy v prózách J. J. Rousseaua, anglický sentimentalismus, žánrové různotvary v románu 18. století - gotický román, román výchovný, román filozofický apod.) Osvícenství v americké literatuře 2) Pojetí romantismu v americké a evropské literatuře (rozpor "ducha a světa", inovace v žánrech a pojetí lyriky, generační hlediska, konfesionální aspekty, velká historická vyprávění, záliba v exotismu apod.) Anglické a britské varianty romantismu: gotické prvky, transcendentalismus 3) Cesty románu 19. století (obraz měnícího se světa u anglických, amerických, francouzských a ruských romanopisců, pojetí naturalistického románu u E. Zoly, americká varianta naturalismu) 4) Moderna druhé poloviny 19. století (umělecké inovace v básnickém výrazu u Baudelaira, prokletých básníků a symbolistů, formování nové estetiky v díle J.-K. Huysmanse a Oscara Wildea) 5) Avantgarda - program nového umění (specifika jednotlivých směrů: futurismus, expresionismus, dada, surrealismus apod., jejich představitelé) 6) Angloamerický modernismus: Imagismus a Vorticismus Ezry Pounda, impresionismus Virginie Woolfové, epifanie v tvorbě Jamese Joyce. 7) Imaginace groteskního světa u německy píšících autorů (zejm. F. Kafka a R. Musil) a hledání existencialistických východisek (J.-P- Sartre, A. Camus, S. de Beauvoir) 8) Některé tendence ve světové literatuře druhé poloviny 20. století (Beat Generation - A. Ginsberg, J. Kerouac, rozvoj románu v latinsko-amerických literaturách - pojetí magického realismu u G. Garcíi Márqueze, magický realismus v americké židovské literatuře: Bernard Malamud, vymezení postmoderny v textech U. Eca)
