Course objectives
The subject History of Antiquity is to provide students with basic knowledge of political history of Greece and Rome, i.e. time of antiquity. Particular lectures and their topics are a lead to deeper independent studies of literature. It focuses on e.g. realizing reciprocial penetrating and influencing the world of Greek poleis and the Roman Empire, on perceiving what linked and separated them. Attention is also paid to the features of the antique society which influenced next development of the mankind.
Learning outcomes
Based on the study of scientific literature and lectures, the student is able to navigate the history of ancient Greece and Rome, determine the causes and consequences of their development, learn about the origins of Christianity and understand the cultural legacy of Greco-Roman civilization for the history of European culture.
Syllabus
  • 1. Minoan and Mycenaean culture. Dark period.
    2. Characteristic of the polis. The great Greek colonization
    3. Sparta-specifics of development of State, the social structure of society.
    4. Path of Athens to democracy. The specifics of the development of the Athenian polis.
    5. Greece-Persian war. The Summit period Pericles of Athens-democracy, culture and the arts flourish.
    6. Peloponnesian War-causes of conflict. The struggle for hegemony in Greece (Sparta, Thebes, Athens). The rise of Macedonia, Alexander the Great, the Hellenistic East.
    7. Mysterious Etruscans-the creators of the first civilization in Italy. The origins of Rome.
    8. The early Roman Republic. Characteristics of the Republican establishment (the Senate, the authorities, the people's Assembly).
    9. The Expansion of Rome into the Mediterranean. The three Punic Wars, the consequences of the wars on the internal political scene in Rome. The emergence of the province-territory of the Roman Empire
    10. Period of crisis of the Roman Republic, civil war (Marius and Sulla, Caesar and Pompey, and Octavian and Marcus Antonius).
    11. The Duchies-the path to power of Octavian. A comparison of the Principate, its basic characters and comparation with the Republic and dominate.. Relations with Germans. The causes of the crisis. The beginnings of Christianity.
    12 Dominate-causes of the crisis of the Roman Empire. The Government of the emperor Domitian and his reforms.Migration of Nations. Fate and the demise of the Empire, the consequences.
