Course objectives
Lectures are intended to describe the basic power, economic and cultural stress axis of medieval Europe and medieval society changes. The main attention is paid to the European area (including Byzantium) in the variable bindings center-periphery. The interpretation is also taken into account the internal dynamics of the Arab / Muslim world and civilizations with which Europe has been in business and diplomatic contacts (Central Asia, China).
Learning outcomes
Student will gain basic knowledge not only about the problems of medieval history, but also about their conception within European historiography.

  • 1. The Middle Ages. Definition. Spatial and temporal context.
    2. The legacy of the Roman Empire. Migration. Match the Apennine peninsula.
    3. Frankish Empire - Byzantium - the Arab world. Viking expansion.
    4. Year 1000th Power, cultural and social changes in Western Europe.
    5. The beginnings of statehood in Central Europe. The north and east.
    6. Church emancipation. Clashes. Empire and Papacy.
    7. The phenomenon of the Crusades. Interaction and penetration of the Christian and Islamic world. Conquista and reconquista.
    8. Rise to power of French and English monarchy. Hundred Years War.
    9. Economic and social changes in Europe's High Middle Ages. The crisis of the 14th century.
    10. Mediterranean world and the decline of Byzantium.
    11. Central and Eastern Europe and the Turkish expansion.
    12. Refocusing of the Western world. Italian Renaissance. Birth of Moscow's empire.
