Course objectives
The course focuses on the basic milestones, specifics and personalities of the history of monument preservation in the Czech and European scale from the oldest forms of social relationship to human works of the past to the current monument preservation. The course is focused on the development of relevant legislation, key personalities, specific examples from practice and key organizations developing their activities in the field of cultural heritage protection.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, the student will be able to:
- explain the development of monument preservation from Antiquity to the present;
- describe the basic milestones, specifics and personalities of the history of monument preservation in the Czech and European scale;
- to analyze the activities of institutions and the legal regulation of monument preservation in history.
Syllabus
  • 1. Literature and sources on the topic. Basic terminology.
  • 2. Approaches to cultural heritage in Antiquity and the Middle Ages.
  • 3. Monuments in Renaissance - the Renaissance of monuments. The desecration of the concept of monuments and the replacement of the sacred dimension with an aesthetic dimension.
  • 4. Monuments in Baroque in the wake of the Reformation and Counter-Reformation. From (dis)respect to the past to baroque historicism.
  • 5. Enlightenment on the way to modern monument preservation.
  • 6. Monument preservation as a public matter. The birth of modern monument preservation in the first half of the 19th century.
  • 7. Monuments and the professionalization of monument preservation in the second half of the 19th century.
  • 8. Vienna School of Art History and the Formation of Modern Preservation of Monuments in Central Europe around 1900 (A. Riegl, M. Dvořák and others).
  • 9. Monument preservation in the interwar period and during World War II: changes in institutionalization, protection and presentation of cultural heritage. Prominent personalities (Zdeněk Wirth, Václav Wagner and others), significant achievements and specific events for the restoration of monuments.
  • 10. Monument preservation in post-war and pre-revolutionary Czechoslovakia (1945–1989): changes in institutionalization, protection and presentation of cultural heritage. Legislation, key personalities, institutions, significant achievements and specific actions of restoration of monuments.
  • 11. Modern monument care after 1990 to the present.
  • 12. Manor / country houses – changes in management, protection and presentation.
  • 13. International activities, institutions and documents in the field of protection and registration of cultural heritage of world or international importance after 1945 (UNESCO, ICOMOS, ČNK ICOMOS and others).
