Prerequisites

Student must successfully pass the course M0015 - Conservation and Restoration I. or M1031 Museum Conservation and Restoration II.
Student must submit current medical certificate of his medical fitness for work in the laboratory of conservation center, where he works and manipulates with chemicals (acids, bases, volatile substances etc.)and uses chemical-physical instruments.

Course objectives

The aim of the seminar is to acquaint students with comprehensive issues of conservation and restoration of cultural heritage objects of selected inorganic and organic materials. It is another step in laboratory practice and the extent of self-employment in the laboratory reflects the growing level of knowledge of students. Students can verify their theoretical knowledge seminar exercises in the Centre of restoration and conservation UHV. Attention will be paid to ceramics, glass, stone, bricks buildings, and wood, including wood from archaeological findings, the issue of protection of wooden architecture in museums, paper, and books. Students can in the laboratory exercises try out possibilities survey of artefact, preventive conservation, remedial conservation, basic restoration techniques and methods of documentation of the treatment. The thesis also mentions the area of occupational safety and familiarization with the potential risks for staff and collections. The main task of the seminar will be writing a seminar paper - namely, developing a concept complex treatment on a given object. Each student will have to carry out research, treatment proposal, remedial conservation, storing and documentation. Listeners must continuously during the semester also process subtasks that they will be entered in the laboratory exercises. Above the results of seminar papers will be shared discussion moderated by the teacher.

Learning outcomes

After completing the course, the student will be able to: - describe the principle of methods used for conservation and restoration of objects made of silicates, wood and paper - propose an intervention procedure for the above mentioned materials - carry out work on objects made of the above-mentioned materials

  1. Conservation and restoration techniques for ceramics.
  2. Property damage and exploration of glass.
  3. Conservation and restoration of glass.
  4. Features and damaging the stone.
  5. Conservation and restoration procedures for stone.
  6. Specifics protection of masonry structures.
  7. Specifics identification and remediation of biological attack on organic materials.
  8. Property damage and procedures for wood preservatives. Preservation of dry wood.
  9. Property damage and procedures for wood preservatives. Conservation wet (archaeological) wood.
  10. Specifics protection of wooden architecture.
  11. Property damage and research paper.
  12. Conservation and restoration procedures for paper.
