Course objectives
Students will acquire basic knowledge in the field of monitoring and documentation of biodiversity and learn about the causes of extinction of species and populations.
Syllabus
  • 1. Basic principles and terminology of ecological monitoring. Documentation natural heritage (nature and landscape). Documentation and conservation activities, in terms of protection of the natural heritage.
    2. Monitoring the status and threats to biodiversity. World programs and monitoring organization. Historical monitoring.
    3. Monitoring and documentation extinction rates. Data collection, recording, analysis and interpretation (assessment methods and mapping).
    4. Island biogeography and the current rate of species extinction.
    5. Anropogenní causes of extinction. Factors important in terms of vulnerability to extinction.
    The rarity. Ability distractions. Longevity. The rate of increase of the population. Factors threats to biodiversity on Earth.
    6. Loss of habitat. Basic characteristics of the fragmentation and degradation of habitat. Landscape fragmentation.
    7. The destruction of native habitats. Isolation of fragments of the original habitat. Effects of edge effect. Question size of natural reserves.
    8. The consequences of the invasion of non-native species. The negative impact of the invasion of non-native species. Competition. Predation. Transmission of diseases and parasites. The success of invasive species.
    9. Monitoring and documentation of habitat pollution. Eutrophication. Acidification of soils and waters. Monitoring of air pollutants.
    10. Landscape. Landscape character. The European Landscape Convention. The basic principles of landscape ecology. Classification of habitats. Global climate change and its impact on biodiversity.
    11. Structure and function of landscape mosaics. Fragmentation and disturbance of the landscape. Excessive use of resources.
    12.Protection of landscape. Landscape character and its evaluation.
