Course objectives
Introduction into the problems of the ionizing (radioactive) radiation, its properties, principles of radiation protection, units of radiation, dose, etc., rough knowledge of allowed values.
Syllabus
  • 1. Natural and artificial sources of radiation. Their characterization and comparison.
    2. Natural radionuclides, decay sequences. Radioactivity of the living environment components.
    3. Cosmic radiation, cosmogenic radionuclides.
    4. Doses caused by external radiation and by internal contamination.
    5. Transport kinetics of the important radionuclides in living environment to people.
    6. Artificial radiative background, its structure. Consequences of accidents.
    7. Fission process and the emitted radiation. Nuclear explosions.
    8. Nuclear energetic facilities and technologies.
    9. Radiation sources in technology, medicina and science.
    10. Artificial radionuclides metabolism, tissue doses and related questions.
    11. Measurement of radiative background and interpretation of physical data. Monitoring networks.
    12. Nuclear fuel cycle and its influence on living environment.
    13. Burnup fuel, radioactive waste.
    14. Radioactive waste storage and the principles of nuclear security.
    Prerequisities:
    Elementary course of physics.
