Course objectives
The aim of the seminar is to acquaint students with the basic issues of conservation and restoration of arts and crafts works stored in museum collections. Students will be familiar with the history field, theoretical background, ethical recommendations and legislation. In the next part of the course will be specifically discussed the scope of protection paintings and sculptures and arts and crafts works. Attention will be paid to the specifics of such interventions on the furniture, musical instruments, weapons, etc. During the run of the course, students will learn the specifics of restoration documentation and the specific requirements for preventive conservation of these types of objects. Students will be acquainted with the practical application of materials and techniques, either in the Centre of restoration and conservation UHV, or in museums. The student in the seminar will be writing a seminar paper on one of these topics. Within the course of one semester the principles of administration, management and handling of the natural-history museum sub-collections are presented including their structure, recording, cataloguing a digitalization, strategy of acquisition etc. Lessons are given in the form of oral presentations and excursions to particular departments of the Silesian museum. The students will also be acquainted with specialities of particular sub-collection, viz. botanical, dendrological, entomological, geological, paleontological and zoological. The special and popularization outputs of the research performed in the natural history departments are also presented.
