Course objectives
Firstly, this class aims at introducing the students into theoretical foundations of cultural studies, with particular emphasis on culturally-oriented research into modern German literature. A second objective is an introduction into fields of application of modern philology regarded as a branch of cultural studies: literary life as a 'system' of literature with actors, institutions and mechanisms of production, reception, evaluation and re-evaluation of literary texts, and texts in the field of tensions, influencies and counter-influencies of intercultural and trans-media semiotic systems. In sum, new and broader fields of studies and applications of philological studies are to be opened up and introduced to students. As a whole, the course consists of three parts: 1. What are and in which way do operate literary studies regarded as a branch of cultural studies? This question will be answered by way of examples by introducing basic concepts of inter-mediality, cultural semiotics, and New historicism. 2. An introduction into basic fields of application (1): Inter-mediality: Some of its forms, modes of action, genres and systems 3. An introduction into basic fields of application (2): The literary system as a social and inter-(cultural) system: literary memorials, centers and awards; translations and other forms of inter-cultural transfers. The first field of applications will render the theoretical introduction into semiotics and inter-mediality more precise and provide more details, while the second field of applications will, generally speaking, add to the discussions of New historicism, and history of mentalities. The class will combine elements from lectures and practical exercises. A written final exam will serve as a basic means of qualification. Presentations and portefeuilles to be written by the students may be added.
