Course objectives
The course extends students' knowledge of cultural history and heritage with European or world context. Attention is paid to selected world monuments (Mesopotamia, Egypt, civilizations of the American continent and Asia) and especially European cultural heritage (monuments of different countries from prehistory, antiquity, Middle Ages, Renaissance and Baroque, 19th and 20th centuries). Their role in the historical context and especially in contemporary practice, especially in the area of education, tourism and the development of the tertiary sphere, is emphasized. Students learn to distinguish and compare cultural values from different historical periods and different world civilizations. They are encouraged to formulate an independent opinion and to adopt a creative approach to presentation of cultural heritage.

  • 1. Introduction, terminology, literature and information sources.
  • 2. Culture and cultural heritage, basic characteristics, historical trends.
  • 3. Cultural monuments of European prehistory.
  • 4. Development of cultural values in ancient Mesopotamia and Egypt.
  • 5. Culture and cultural heritage of ancient Greece and Rome.
  • 6. Monuments and cultural heritage of civilizations of America and Asia.
  • 7. Culture and selected cultural heritage of the European Middle Ages (Romanesque and Gothic styles).
  • 8. - 9. Culture and cultural heritage of the European Renaissance.
  • 10. - 11. Culture and cultural heritage of the European Baroque.
  • 12. - 13. European and world culture of 19th and 20th centuries (Empire, Neo-Historic styles, Cubism, Functionalism, SORELA, etc.).
