- Course objectives
- The course provides students with an orientation in basic issues related to contemporary American studies and culture. Like the subject of Culture Studies 1 in the UK, it draws attention to the basic political, cultural and social aspects of life in the USA with regard to what is specific to the USA. Based on the reading of the assigned texts, emphasis will be placed on the ability to comment on what is being discussed and to discuss professional topics related to American realities. The aim of the course is, among other things, the development of critical thinking of students, as well as the effort to support their efforts for further self-education in the field of American studies.

- 2. Religion in the USA and the role of Puritans.
- 3. South vs. North, reconstruction of the country.
- 4. Geography of the state and settlement of the USA (so-called frontier).
- 5. The American Dream; education system in the USA.
- 6. Ethnicity and immigration.
- 7. African Americans and the civil rights movement.
- 8. The Vietnam War and various attitudes towards it, hippies.
- 9. Mass culture, pop culture, media.
- 10. Political system in the USA, government.
- 11. Trauma after 9/11, nationalism.
- 12. USA in current war conflicts.
- 13. What it means to be American: uniqueness and American cultural identity.
