- Course objectives
- Introduction of the medieval and early modern city as an independent legal, economic and cultural phenomenon of European society and its material (housing, clothing, hygiene) and spiritual everyday life (traditions, festivities, leisure), all with regard to the diverse stratification of cities in terms of size, importance and character, as well as the stratification of urban society and the individual role and status of the individual, gender, religious and educational aspects. Emphasis on the urban environment in the Czech lands in the context of European development and with the awareness of their central location at the interface between the Western and Eastern European cultural circle.
- Learning outcomes
- By completing the course, the student will gain a comprehensive (legal, administrative, economic, cultural) insight into the phenomenon of medieval and early modern cities. They will get acquainted with the idea of living, clothing, hygiene, they will get acquainted with the spiritual everyday life of bourgeois society. All this with regard to the stratification of cities in terms of their size, importance and character, as well as with regard to the stratification of urban society and the individual role and status of the individual, generals, religious and educational aspects.

- 1. Introduction (topic definition, literature, sources).
- 2. Urban landscape and medieval / early modern city in Central Europe.
- 3. Stratification of cities (legal status, function, size).
- 4. Urban society I. - internal conditions (structure, legal status of social classes, groups and individuals: townspeople, settlers, people on the outskirts).
- 5. Urban Society II. - external relations (economic and social contacts and ties, relations with the nobility, the countryside).
- 6. Man, woman, children and family.
- 7. Religion, confessionalization of urban society.
- 8. Education and training, value perception of the world.
- 9. Bourgeois material culture (housing, clothing, hygiene).
- 10. Bourgeois spiritual culture (traditions, festivities, leisure).
- 11. The town as the center of dominion.
- 12. The world of rural towns.
