Course objectives
The program is aimed at clarifying the importance of presentation of the archaeological heritage as an important part of the cultural heritage of mankind. Students will be introduced to the ways of access to archaeological sites not only in the field (archeological, Archeopark, nature trails, etc.), but also museums, monuments and other cultural institutions. Discussed will be the main principles of creation of exhibition programs (exhibitions, galleries, etc.) from their training (libretto, screenplay) and physical implementation to the use of interactive media and forms of communication with the public.
Learning outcomes
Knowledge in the range of lectures and basic literature. Practical orientation in the field of museums and presentation of archaeological monuments in the field.
Syllabus
  • 1. Importance of the protection and presentation of archaeological cultural heritage (UNESCO, ICOM, ICOMOS), application of archaeological heritage care in non-museum and museum institutions, establishment and organization of museum and heritage care in the Czech Republic.
    2. Movable and non-movable archaeological heritage and manners of its preservation "in fondo" and "in situ", the concept of non-material cultural heritage, legal protection of archaeological heritage in the field and categorization of archaeological research.
    3. Manners of the presentation of archaeological heritage in the field, open-air museums, open-air archaeological museums and parks, discovery trails, information panels, practical usage of the experiment and reconstruction method in archaeology.
    4. Archaeological finds and collections and their administration, characteristics of collecting activities, manners of processing and documentation of archaeological collections, forms of filing, cataloguing, digitalization.
    5. Principles and main forms of museum presentation of archaeological cultural heritage, drawing up communication strategy and exhibition plans, installations, exhibitions and mini-exhibitions, multimedia programmes.
    6. Main stages in the preparation of archaeological installations and exhibitions, organization and financial management, use of external financial sources, terms and planning of exhibition activities, risk factors.
    7. Project preparation of archaeological exhibitions, theme and concept preparation, technical script, visual and spatial design, conservation and restoration, loans.
    8. Realization of archaeological exhibitions and installation of exhibits, exhibition collections, documentation and cataloguing of displayed items, provision of optimum conditions and maintenance.
    9. Handling of exhibits during installation in terms of safety, transport, mounting and insurance of exhibits on loan, dismantling of exhibitions.
    10. Assessment criteria of archaeological installations and exhibitions, monitoring the numbers of visitors, attracting target groups, assessment of the success of presentation projects and accompanying events.
    11. Public relations through the media (press, radio, TV), interactive presentations (Power Point), animation websites (film, video), multimedia presentations (CD and DVD), didactic programmes, children's workshops, games.
    12. Internet promotion of archaeological heritage and further modes of presentation, virtual museums, lecture series, theme lectures, programmes for schools and the public, workshops, museum fairs.
