- Course objectives
- The aim of the course is to inform the students of the history of modern sport that has been established since the end of the 18 century in England by means of codification of traditional games and entertainment. It should provide methodical tools to understand sport as an important social phenomenon. The students will get an overview of a specific source issue as well as of contemporary methodological attitudes of West European historiography of sport. Based on the work with different types of sources, the position of sport and physical culture (including Sokol and Turner gymnastics, hiking, etc.) in the frame of modernisation processes will be demonstrated.
