Course objectives
The aim of the course is to acquaint the participants with the current state of the Czech linguistics and to give them an orientation in the basics of linguistic terminology and literature so that they are able to direct their attention to the field and the practical aspects of the study.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, the student will be able to: - direct their attention to the basics of linguistic terminology; - be well informed about professional literature; - be familiar with the current state of the Czech linguistics; - be well versed in the field and practical aspects of study;

  • 1. Language and communication, Definition of language, Language typology
  • 2. English as a world language, Germanic languages, Accents and standards
  • 3. Linguistics – scientific study of language, Structuralism, The scope of linguistics
  • 4. Grammar, morphology, syntax
  • 5. Phonetics and phonology
  • 6. Word stock, lexicology and lexicography
  • 7. The linguistic sign - semantics and semiotics
  • 8. Obtaining linguistic data – corpus linguistics, Corpus annotation, Types of corpora
  • 9. Language and mind – psycholinguistics, Idiolect, Speech disorders
  • 10. Language and society – sociolinguistics, Sociolect, Dialect
  • 11. Language and logic – pragmalinguistics, Cooperative Principle, Politeness Principle
