V systematizovaném přehledu podavá tento předmět výklad historického vývoje knihoven a knihovnictví a je zaměřen na vybrané kapitoly z obecných dějin knihoven a knihovnictví. V tomto předmětu budou probrány historické souvislosti vývoje českých a moravských knihoven do počátku 16. století, v návaznosti na jejich další vývoj do roku 1918. Podstatnou součástí je poskytnout základní vývoj knihoven a knihovnictví v Československu v letech 1918-1938.
