- Course objectives
- 1. Batch processing tasks, hardware and software environment, imperfections and problems. 2. Basic database concepts, file management system, basic database system terminology, 3-level architecture of database systems. 3. Physical data organisation: models for external storage organisation, sequential, hashed, indexed files, B/trees, files with variable length records. 4. Relational model, relation schemes, relational algebra, relational calculus. 5. Query languages, features of data manipulation languages, language SQL, data definition, data manipulation, query formulation. 6. Design and development of relational database systems: functional dependences, decomposition of relation schemes, normal forms for relation schemes, multi-valued dependencies. 7. The network model and the DBTG proposal, implementation of networks, the hierarchical model, implementation of hierarchical databases.
