Course objectives
Equations of state of superdense matter giving structure of white dwarfs and neutron stars are presented. Basic laws of general relativity necessary to determine structure of neutron stars and white dwarfs are discussed. General relativistic polytropes are solved as an example.
Syllabus
  • Creation and evolution of stars. Possible final stages of star evolution - white dwarf, neutron stars, black holes.
    Fermi-Dirac statistics, degenerated Fermi gas.
Non-relativistic equation of hydrostatic equilibrium. Structure and properties of white dwarfs. Chandrasekhar limiting mass.
Equation of hydrostatic equilibrium (TOV equation). Its derivation and solution for objects of uniform density, limits for the compactness of
    neutron stars.
Equations of state for outer parts of neutron stars.
Beta equilibrium and its consequences. Equations of state for neutron star core.
Observations and finding of neutron stars. Pulsars.
Testing of neutron star equations of state by observed properties of neutron stars.
    Strange and hybrid stars.
