Course objectives
The basic ideas of general relativity are presented and related to the ideas of special theory of relativity. The relevant parts of differential geometry are described and applied to the construction of the physical laws. The Einstein gravitational equations, relating the curvature of spacetime and matter distribution, are derived in a heurestic way. The vacuum Einstein equations are solved for the spherically symmetric spacetimes and the Schwarzschild solution is obtained that is used to demonstrated the three standard test of general relativity and the case of extremely strong gravitational field of black holes. The linearized Einstein equations are used to describe the weak gravitational waves. Finally, the Friedman cosmological models are discussed.
