Course objectives
The aim of this class is to open some insights into the state(s), cultural life and society of the Germans from a historical viewpoint. The main focus lies on symbols, ideas, and crucial intersections of social and cultural life, in short 'lieux de mémoire'. The changes in their interpretation during different periods of history should at least in principle - be reconstructed. In this way, basic knowledge about German history and nowaday's Germany shall be made accessible to the students in order to show around which crucial issues German public life is revolving again and again.
