Course objectives
The lecture focused on theoretical problems conservation, as manifested in the views of the protagonists field in the 19th and 20 century in Central Europe (A. Riegl, M. Dvořák, the Czech countries V. Wagner, V. Birnbaum, V. Richter). Interpretation is designed in four thematic sessions: 1 / term historical value, Background with Alois Riegl, specification of the concept and its application in the present, Determination of historical value, its verification, protection and presentation, Philosophical foundations of conservation and the question of authenticity, 2 / Historical Methods care: restoration, preservation, renovation, restoration as historically contingent and axiological categories, Relationship monument and environment, the relative frequency of monuments, economics monument care, psychosocial aspects of conservation, 3 / categorization of sites in the past and today, opposition art history and material classification landmarks - such as industrial monuments, folk architecture, historic parks and gardens, etc. Evidence and documentation - past and present, the situation in the Czech Republic and other countries of Europe, 4 / Relationship movable and immovable monuments, installation practice principles - the situation before and after 1989.
Syllabus
  • 1. Introduction, concepts monumentic thinking and consciousness, defining concepts using examples from antiquity and the Middle Ages.
    2. Opinions protagonists field at the end of 19th Century in Central Europe - Alois Riegl and Max Dvořák.
    3. Czech response to the Viennese School of art history - V. Wagner, V. Birnbaum, V. Richter.
    4. The concept of heritage values - starting with Alois Riegl and specifications of the concept and its application in the present. Determination of historical value, its verification, protection and presentation.
    5. Methods of conservation - restoration, preservation, renovation, restoration as historically contingent and axiological categories.
    6. Relationship monument and the environment, the relative frequency of monuments, economics monument care, psychosocial aspects of conservation.
    7. Categorization of sites in the past and today.
    8. Opposition art-sorting and physical landmarks - such as industrial monuments, folk architecture, historic parks and gardens, etc.
    9. Evidence and documentation - past and present, the situation in the Czech Republic and other European countries.
    10. Relationship movable and immovable monuments, principles installation practice - the situation before and after 1989.
