Course objectives
The seminar introduces the composition and design of certain text types, such as newspaper articles, booklets and websites. Students will discuss the possibilities of individual text types and will learn to compose them in the seminar by producing their own texts and websites. Simultanously, they will reflect on the specific language of the discussed text types.
Syllabus
  • The aim of this class is to practise writing of simple, free genres of texts up to short essays, possible texts for websites, (fictitious) advertisements etc. Fictional (narrative) and non-fictional informational texts or opinion texts are distinguished from each other on a systematical basis.
    1. With fictional texts, we shall start from types of paraphrase such as account and summary as well as the completion of the beginnings of stories, and the problem of how to find a new conclusion of one's own.
The following steps will be the verbal narration of a comic strip, the invention of a free text inspired by some picture or caricature; entries in to a diary, the descripiton of daily acitivities, a resume (e.g. for an application) as well as free narrative texts and a dialogue of advertisement for some everyda product.
    2. As for texts expressing an opinion, we shall start as well with reproduction, e.g. in form of a summary. After that, forms of argumentative writing shall be practised and the expressing of one's own standpoint as to a given issue shall be developed.
