Course objectives
The end of the period of the Roman Republic and the creation of new forms of Government represents in the history of the Roman Empire a groundbreaking stage of development. The aim of the lectures is the analysis of long-term and short-term causes leading to the fall of the Republic, the creation of the second triumvirate and its gradual disintegration, to the creation of new forms of Government concentrated into the hands of Octavian-Augustus. The Decade of his rule, the Roman period for the imperium of the economic and political consolidation, territorial expansion and the flowering of culture, aimed to promote the mores maiorum promote Augustových acts. Learning outcomes
Ability to characterize the causes of the Roman republic´s emergence and crisis. Knowledge of the evolution of the Roman republic during the Civil wars and the origin of the Principle; foreign and internal politics during this period; the golden age of the Roman literature; understanding of the meaning and mode of promotion in the form of symbols, literature and visual arts; family relations leading to the creation of a new ruling dynasty.

  • 1. Augustus and his time in the works of ancient authors, Res gestae divi Augusti. Information on the secondary literature.
    2. The time of the first triumvirate.
    3.-4. The struggle for power, the period of the second triumvirate.
    5. The path from the Triumvir to Augustus.
    6. The reorganization of the Roman Empire and its capital, Rome.
    7. The Roman army in the time of Augustus.
    8. The foreign policy of Augustus.
    9. Reform efforts of Augustus Roman society-relationship to the Senate, riders, the Roman people
    10. The culture of the time of Augustus.
    11. The architecture of the time of Augustus.
