Course objectives
The course acquaints students with the development of museums and the wider museum phenomenon from the early modern period to the present days. It places this development in broader social, cultural, scientific (epistemological) and ideological contexts. The main emphasis is placed on the Central European area and on the observation of supra-regional parallels between individual institutions, on the typology of museum institutions and non-institutional manifestations of the museum phenomenon, on the connection with the emergence of modern nations and nationalisms. In addition, this course provides an introductory insight into the issues of history, theory and methodology of historical museology.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, the student will be oriented:
- in the history of Czech museums (museums in the Czech Lands);
- in the history of museums in a worldwide context;
