Course objectives
The subject of this class is an introduction into German literature from the twentieth century by th aid of lyric poetry and (in most cases) short texts in prose or excerpts. The time span to be covered reaches from the turn of the century (Rainer Maria Rilke) to literary works that have been written after the German re-unification. The most important authors to be dealt with will be Thomas Mann, Franz Kafka, Bertolt Brecht, Alfred Doeblin, Friedrich Duerrenmatt, Heinrich Boell, Christa Wolf and Volker Braun. A special emphasis will be placed on the form and structure of literary texts and elementary techniques of how to analyse them. Short prose by Marie Luise Kaschnitz will serve as a model for such an analysis. Titles of texts and studies will be named on the Moodle website resp. by the teacher in the resp. lessons.
