Course objectives
The seminar is devoted to the phenomena of dynasty and dynasticism as key categories from the history of power (not only) in the Middle Ages. With regard to the generally universalist concept of dynasticism, the basic framework given by the focus on the medieval reality of the Bohemian lands is programmatically viewed from the perspective of the (Central) European context. Attention will be paid to selected topics and methodological approaches in the field of instrumentalization and distribution of sovereign power. Emphasis will be placed on constructing the legitimacy of power and on the competitive legitimization strategies developed by individual ruling (royal, princely) dynasties in order to ensure acceptance of their claimed dominance by other ruling families, privileged subjects (states) and the broadest strata of the controlled population.
Learning outcomes
By completing the course, the student will deepen in a comprehensive way practical and theoretical knowledge about the functioning of the pre-modern state, whose existence was firmly rooted in the categories of monarchism and dynasticism. At the same time, they will master the currently discussed problems of a methodological nature both in the context of Czech and (Central) European historiography.
