Course objectives
The aim of the subject is to get acquainted with Italian history from antiquity to the beginning of the Risorgimento. The interpretation focuses on the main events and characters of the given period with an emphasis on their mutual connection and influence. Italian history will also be embedded in the overall picture of European history. The seminar is focused on the history of art.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, the student will be able to:
- describe the key events of Italian history;
- compare the course of Italian history in comparison with European history;
- analyze the causes leading to substantial changes in society, politics, etc.;
- evaluate the role of important figures of Italian culture for the development of European culture.

  • 1. Introductory lesson. The issue of understanding Italian history.
  • 2. Italy before Roman expansion.
  • 3. Ancient Rome.
  • 4. The demise of the Roman Empire, causes and consequences.
  • 5. Declension of proper names in ancient and modern Italy in Czech.
  • 6. Early Middle Ages. Maritime Republic.
  • 7. Italian communes and signoria.
  • 8. The Italian concept of humanism and the Renaissance.
  • 9. Culture at the courts of Italian monarchs.
  • 10. 16th century, period of foreign domination.
  • 11. 17th century, Baroque.
  • 12. 18th century, Napoleon.
  • 13. Summary.
