Course objectives
The aim of the course is to acquire knowledge in specific learning and behaviour disorders. The course includes a history of the constitution of the subdiscipline special education of persons with partial deficiencies and current trends in intervention in accordance with the applicable rules of educational legislation. Emphasis will be placed on familiarity with professional terminology and conditions of literacy and numeracy.
Learning outcomes
Professional Knowledge:
- students can describe current trends and concepts in the discipline of special education of persons with partial deficiencies and they know the legislative framework
- they can define the basic concepts and theories of specific learning disabilities and behaviour
- they can clarify the conditions of acquisition of literacy and numeracy
Professional Skills:
- students can explain the significance of the engagement of a special pedagogue in an SLD or BD intervention
- they can apply the knowledge of partial competences acquisition of literacy and numeracy
- they can analyzy specific signs and symptoms of risk manifestations of in acquisition of literacy and numeracy
General qualification:
- students can adequately reflect the special needs of children and pupils with an increased risk of school failure
- students are ready to cooperate with other professionals for the purpose of eliminating demotivating factors and determining incentive measures
- they can search new findings in the discipline for their application in special education programmes and rehabilitation programmes

  • 1. Specific learning disorders, basic terminology.
  • 2. Pupils with SLD in the inclusive environment of primary and secondary schools.
  • 3. Diagnostics and support measures in schools and counselling centres.
  • 4. Specific behaviour disorders, definition, basic terminology.
  • 5. Etiology and symptomatology of SLD and BD.
  • 6. SLD and BD as risk factors of school failure.
  • 7. Personality of students with SLD in the context of inclusive environment.
  • 8. Classification of SLD manifestation, case studies.
  • 9. Models of education of students with SLD.
  • 10. Individualized and personal approach to students with ADD / ADHD.
  • 11. Examination of pupils with SLD.
  • 12. Re-education of SLD.

Assessment methods
Elaboration of a reflection on the topic "The role of a special pedagogue and his competence for working with pupils with special educational needs". Written test, 70% of correct answers are required to pass the course.

Teacher's information
In course of continuous study, students use the study material, processing it to fulfil selected correspondence assignments which will be discussed in conclusion of the course. At the exam, students demonstrate knowledge of compulsory literature and lectures of the in-person instruction. Students will be able to continuously consult the topics studied individually or in teams, via e-mail, or in consultations upon request.
