Course objectives
The aim of the subject is to introduce the causes, course and possibilities of solution of interethnic conflicts in Europe with focus on border regions of central Europe and the Czech republic. On the basis of ethnologic, historical, sociological, psychological, cultural comparison, political and other findings the students will be able of reflexion of relations between states and nations, national and ethnic minorities including evaluation of national myths, stereotypes and prejudice. The emphasis will be put on explanation of causes and consequences of division of Europe in the 20th century for nations living on the border of mutual contact, on cognition of current focuses of interethnic tense, especially in central Europe and in border regions of Czech lands as well as on finding way-outs of further development. The lectures will introduce basic concepts of ethnic theory lengthen more closely how the opposite interests of central European nations and states in the 20th century projected to the development of interethnic relations in border regions. They will, on specific examples, more closely characterize history and specifics of interethnic relations in border regions in the Czech republic with focus on political, social and cultural uniqueness and on characteristics of current main problems of ethnic minorities in border regions. The graduate should manifest knowledge of origin, development and specifics of all important interethnic conflicts in Europe and in the Czech republic in modern era, should be able to obtain new information about this topic, should be able of reflexion of cultural differences and stereotypes in relations between nations and nationalities in critical border regions and should orientate in current issues of mutual co-existence of nations and ethnics in border regions as well as possibilities of their practical solution. The basic form of study is individual work with Czech literature and preparation of seminar paper.

Teacher's information
seminar paper - essay or scientific article aimed at concrete topic from the lecture content, (7 pages) with the aim to verify the ability of generalisation of a concrete issue and processing of facto-graphical and methodological correctly analytic or systematic-analytic scientific article. The exam includes also written test aimed at testing the theoretical and practical knowledge.
