Course objectives
The course focuses on the development of the view on woman and her status in society during European history from Antiquity to recent times, especially in the periods when the concept of gender has played a central role in theoretical debates. The aim of the lectures is to inform students about different concepts, theoretical frameworks and visions though which gender relations were conceptualized and lived. This broader historical-theoretical context of gender issues would help them to understand contemporary social structure and theoretical discussions and enable them to use gender as an analytical tool in practice (this will be the contents of the following course Gender Studies). The course deals with mythological legends, philosophical conceptions, theological views and psychoanalysis if the concept of gender is important for them. Students will also learn about the women's movement in the Europe and the Czech lands.
