Course objectives
The aim of the subject is to familiarize the student with the importance of health education and literacy and its place in the systém of health care. The subject describes theoretical foundations of health education and promotion, stressing various topics that can foster lifestyle change. On completion of the course, the student will be able to actively perform education leading to lifestyle change in various patient/at risk populations.
Syllabus
  • 1. Health and disease - concepts, definitions, principles. Objectives of health education. Methods of health education. Health promotion.
    2. Healthy lifestyle. Health and its determinants. Orientation to health - health policy and strategy, a new concept of nursing. Prevention and health promotion programmes, quality of life assessment, programmes supporting healthy lifestyle, the WHO programme Health for all in the 21st century.
    3. Workplace and living environment and their impact on health. Lifestyle.
    4. Prevention of the most prevalent non-infectious diseases (ischaemic heart disease, obesity, osteoporosis).
    5. Prevention of the most prevalent oncological diseases (colorectal cancer, breast cancer, lung cancer, skin cancer).
    6. Nutrition. Physical activity. Health risks and opportunities for their mitigation. Preventive measures.
    7. Smoking and alcohol. Health risks and opportunities for their mitigation. Preventive measures.
    8. Drugs of abuse and gambling. Health risks and opportunities for their mitigation. Preventive measures.
    9. Stress and mental hygiene. Relaxation, the importance of rest.
    10. HIV/AIDS, sexually transmitted diseases. Health risks and opportunities for their mitigation. Preventive measures.

Requirements for credit: 80 % active participation in practicals (students who could not meet attendance criteria due to serious obstacles will be given extra assignments).
Project presentation. Credit test (a minimum of 80 % correct answers).
