Course objectives
In its compact form, the course offers the view on intercultural communication. After passing the course, the students should be able to distinguish to what extent their culture influences communication and should apply the principles of intercultural communication in relevant context, with emphasis put on public administration. Next, the aim of the course is the comprehension of elements which are essential for effective intercultural communication, including view on world, distance from power, individualism and collectivism, gender roles, time perception in various cultures, context, conflicts as well as a role of various barriers in communication.
Syllabus
  • 1. Communication and culture. Layers of culture. Intercultural communication.
    2. Migration and acculturation. Cultural shock. Berry´s model of acculturation strategies.
    3. Barriers of effective intercultural communication - cultural stereotypes, prejudices, ethnocentrism and racism.
    4. Cultural dimensions models. Hofstede´s model of cultural values.
    5. Language as a reflexion of cultural values. Direct and indirect style of expressing.
    6. Cultural peculiarities in non-verbal communication - time from cultural perspective, importance of silence, proxemics, haptic communication, gestures, facial expression and eye contact.
    7. Communication behaviour of the members of selected national cultures in Europe.
    8. Influence of culture on communication in environment with common intercultural exchanges: workplace. Cultural diversity at workplace. Formality and informality. Decision-making styles.
    9. Influence of culture on communication in environment with common intercultural exchanges: school. Multicultural education.
    10. Influence of culture on communication in environment with common intercultural exchanges: health care. Causes of illness. Care for the ill. Cultural diversity in illness prevention.
    11. Intercultural conflict. Styles of conflict solving.
    12. Intercultural negotiations. Cultural influences on negotiations.
