The course is offered to students of any study field.
Course objectives
The course European Union follows foundation, gradual formation and phasing of EU till the nowadays form (ECSC, EEC, Euratom, Single European Act, Schengen Agreement, so called 4 freedoms, Maastricht Treaty, Treaty of Amsterdam). The focus is on introduction of institutions of EU, their functions and workloads. The course briefly describes legislative area (community law of EU), analysis of common policies of EU, genesis and incidence of structural policy EU with special attention to regions, regional and social policy, solving unemployment issue, and also questions of monetary policy, building monetary union as well as functioning so called other policies. The attention is paid also to phase of active integration policy in relation to states of central and eastern Europe, process of restructuralization of EU institutions as well as issue of educational system and school institutions. The aim of the tutorial is analysis of issues, preparation of seminar papers and further discussion on given topics.

  • 1. Introduction to issue - integration processes in Europe
    2. Genesis of integration processes, theory of integration - supra-national, international, cooperation vs. integration, integration after World War II (terminology), integration grades
    3. Law basement, authorities and institutions of EU
    4. Common policies of EC-EU - general characteristics, trade, transport and agricultural policy
    5. To common monetary policy (Economic and monetary union), foreign and security policy of EU
    6. Social policy of EU (community policy)
    7. Structural and regional policy of EU, structural funds
    8. Other policies (instruments) of EU (industrial, health, school-educational, environment protection, consumer protection etc), sector policies - ECSC, Euratom
    9. EC/EU policy and countries of central and eastern Europe
    10. Nice, Laeken, Convetion, adhesion, current issues, accession of 10 new members (May 2004)
    11. EU constitution, perspectives of further EU expansion
    12. Building political union
