Course objectives
The main objective of the subject is to make students knowledgeable in patient education procedures as an integral part of nursing care. Education and the knowledge level of patients enhance the quality of nursing care and the right of the patient for information is embedded in legislative documents. The course provides a brief overview of the social need for adult education, describes motivational factors in learning, the hierarchy of learning, explain the importance of patient education in nursing, explicates the professional model of patient education in relation to the health status. Prerequisites and skills for educational activity on the part of nurses are also discussed and the principles of patient education are characterized. After completion of the course, the student continues in developing and improving their capacity to educate and to prepare education plans in further study and clinical practice.
Syllabus
  • 1. Key categories and concepts in pedagogy and adult education (pedagogy, andragogics, gerontagogics, adult learner, motivation for learning, docility - the ability to learn?)
    2. The subject of pedagogy and teaching in nursing in the framework of the life-long learning concept.
    3. History of pedagogy, andragogics and gerontagogics.
    4. The systém of pedagogic and related sciences (psychology, sociology).
    5. Elements, principles, forms and methods of education.
    6. Competences of the learner and the educator.
    7. Andro-didactics (motivational factors and docility in adults, objectives, content, forms and methods, learning aids and visuals).
    8. Education in nursing (short history, right of the patient for information, current requirements for patient education, professional models of education, education and the health status of the patient).
    9. Prerequisites for effective patient teaching (nurses as educators and their skills, principles of patient education, education and the process of change, documentation of educational procedures).
    10. Educational plan design (examples of teaching topics, assessment of educational needs of patients, the structure of an education plan).
    11. Methodology of research in pedagogy and adult education.

Teacher's information
Contact hours are based on consultation of selected topics. Non-contact hours are realized via an e-learning environment available at http://elearning.fvp.slu.cz/. At the website, students can use learning materials with on-line assignments. Credits are granted upon successful completion based on a written or oral assessment where the student demonstrates knowledge of compulsory and recommended literature and discusses their on-line assignments. The student can consult the mentor concerning independently studied topics, be it in person, in group sessions or via e-mail.
Requirements for credit: preparation of an education plan and Presentation and defence of the client/patient teaching plan.
