Course Enrolment Limitations
The course is offered to students of any study field.
Course objectives
The students will become familiar with the principal stages of historical development of Russia (the Soviet Union) in the context of historical development of Europe with focus put on development of relations from the 18th century till present day. They will be presented the ideology of Russian tsarist autocracy, transformations of a role of the Orthodox Church in the Russian society and politics, militarization and position of army and security corps in the Russian society. The attention will be paid to importance of Slavic idea of promotion of interests of a Russian state and presentation of Russia as defender, liberator and potential unifier of Slavic nations. The students will acquire principal information concerning the fundamental stages of economic development of Russia, a role of the Soviet Union in division of the world and Europe into two blocs. They will form their opinion regarding the causes and consequences of the decline of the Soviet bloc and the Soviet Union, they will become familiar with the political and economic role of Russia in relation to Central Europe at present day, evaluate its attitude to admission of the former satellite states and cut-off areas to NATO and EU. They will be able to evaluate the prospective and possibilities of further development. At the seminars, the students will be presented the most significant personalities who influenced the development of Russian history and in the frame of controlled discussion they will assess its historical role.

  • 1. Introduction and course arrangement, study literature and assigned requirements
    2. Establishment of Russian state, its decline and restoration (Ivan III, Ivan the Terrible), ascension of the House of Romanovs, origins of expansion, annexation of left-bank Ukraine
    3. Origins of the Russian Empire, expansion to the north of Europe
    4. Expansion, Russia at Seven Years´ War
    5. Role of Russia at the Napoleonic Wars and at the Congress of Vienna
    6. Guard of Europe, efforts to reformation and development till the beginning of the 20th century
    7. The First World War, Russian revolutions, Russia and the Treaty of Versailles
    8. The Soviet Union during the interwar period
    9. The Soviet Union at the Second World War
    10. Establishment of the Soviet bloc and its organizations (Warsaw Pact, Council for Mutual Economic Assistance)
    11. Decline of the Soviet Union and the Soviet bloc, successor states
    12. Process of restoration of power position of a contemporary Russia
