Course objectives
The aim of the course is to characterize counselling as a professional activity within various systems (areas), focusing mainly on social counselling. Educational counselling and the differences between the two counselling systems will also be mentioned. Students will get acquainted with the key areas of the topic, they will get an idea of the functioning of professional counselling in practical activities.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, the student will be able to:
- characterize counselling, define basic concepts related to it
- distinguish individual counselling systems
- give examples of advisory bodies
- characterize the personality of the counsellor and the requirements for his training
- distinguish professional ways of working
- distinguish the dilemma of assistance and control within counselling
- characterize types of counselling, counselling theories and strategies
- describe in detail the individual methods of working with the client
- justify the importance of respecting the needs of the individual in the counselling process (differences between social and educational counselling)
- characterize the differences in the environment in which the counselling process takes place and their significance and impact on individuals
- characterize the conditions of the counselling process and outline the possibilities of influencing them
- analyse the counselling process and its individual phases
- describe the importance of communication in consulting work,
- characterize possible types of clients in counselling work,
outline the specifics of the approach to them
- distinguish individual forms of counselling
- characterize the role and importance of supervision in counselling
- characterize and distinguish educational and pedagogical counselling
- describe the role of counselling in the prevention of risky behaviour
Syllabus
  • 1. Introduction to counselling. Definition of basic terms, the importance of counselling. Counselling systems in the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs, Ministry of Education, Health, etc. Counselling facilities and organizations. Social counselling. Educational counselling.
  • 2. Personality of the counsellor (roles, competencies, requirements, ethical principles, problems, dilemmas, burnout syndrome). Education and training. (Help as support x control. Professional ways of working - custody, supervision, persuasion, clarification, accompaniment, education, counselling, therapy. Counselling x help x psychotherapy x sociotherapy.)
  • 3. Types of counselling - counselling theories and strategies (Psychodynamically oriented, behaviourally oriented, humanistically oriented, cognitive-behaviourally oriented, family oriented). Approaches (directive, non-directive; dynamic, behavioural, experimental, eclectic, syncretic)
  • 4. Methods of working with the client in the context of social counselling. Respecting needs.
  • 5. Conditions of the counselling process. The environment in which the counselling process takes place (differences between social counselling and pedagogically oriented counselling). Consulting team.
  • 6. Communication in consulting work. Feedback. Types of interviews (anamnestic, counselling, therapeutic, psychogenetic), types of questions. Communication barriers. The art of listening, ways of active listening. Verbal and nonverbal communication - paralinguistic characteristics of speech. Principles of effective communication. Questions direct, indirect, projective, instructive, exploratory, constructive, with exceptions, with resources, measuring, etc .; circular questioning.
  • 7. Preparatory phase. First contact with the client. Cooperation agreement (contract). Anamnestic interview - social anamnesis. Key knowledge about the client. Diagnostics. Types of social records. Documentation in social work, meaning.
  • 8. Typology of clients (service users). Specific types of clients in social counselling - risk client, crisis client, active and passive client, voluntary and involuntary client, cooperating client, etc. Strategies for working with individual types of clients.
  • 9. Individual forms of counselling (individual - case, group, community, couple, family, crisis; leadership, information, counselling in the narrower sense, consulting activities).
  • 10. Supervision in counselling. Completion of the counselling process. Rules and principles in the counselling process. Pitfalls of the counselling process.
  • 11. Educational and pedagogical counselling and its specifics.
  • 12. Counselling and its importance in the prevention of risky behaviour in an individual.
