Course objectives
The course objective is to introduce students to the discipline of social psychology and health psychology, the main approaches, concepts and areas, and to create the preconditions for an application of the acquired knowledge in professional practice and personal life. Students will become familiar with the guidelines and selected theories of social conditionality of human development, laws and mechanisms of socialization process, social perception, interaction and communication in different social groups. They will understand the psychology of group life, social attitudes and be able to apply some methods and techniques of social psychology in practice. They will understand basic issues of health and illness, mental load and stress, their causes, symptoms and consequences. They will acquire basic knowledge about psychosomatics, burnout, prevention and mental hygiene.
Learning outcomes
Professional knowledge: Students can describe the basic systems and selected theories of social conditionality of human development. They can explain the ontogenetic process of socialization and social relations issues. They can explain the basic phenomena of group life, functions, features and mechanisms of formation of attitudes. They can define the basic concepts of health psychology, explain the basic psychological aspects of health and illness, burnout and psychosomatic relationships.

Professional skills: Students are well versed in matters of sickness and health. They can detect, interpret and apply information obtained in professional practice. They can apply methods and techniques of social psychology in practice. They can integrate the acquired knowledge with the needs of the discipline, design problem-solving of problematic and conflict situations, develop recommendations to promote health and improve the quality of life of clients.

General qualification: Students are able to use the findings of social psychology to independently solve everyday problems. They can recognizes the practical mechanisms of interpersonal relations and social formations (groups, crowds, community). They can analyze independently the basic components of social contact with people (perception, communication, interaction) in various environments. They can apply selected methods and techniques of social psychology. They can responsibly use the knowledge and skills of health psychology in their personal and professional lives, to independently design measures to maintain and strengthen the health and quality of life.
Syllabus
  • 1. Introduction to the study of social psychology, object and relation of social psychology to other disciplines. Some possibilities of the application of methods and techniques of social psychology in practice
  • 2. Socialization as a relationship between the individual and their environment, mechanisms of socialization
  • 3. Social perception. Creation of an impression. Factors affecting interpersonal perception. Errors in interpersonal perception
  • 4. The essence and types of social interaction. Aggression. Assertiveness. Pro-social behaviour
  • 5. Social communication. Communication process. Verbal and non-verbal communication
  • 6. Psychology of group life (classification, characteristics, structure of group leadership and group management, influence of the group on the behaviour and performance of the individual)
  • 7. Social attitudes. Functions, features and formation of attitudes. Prejudices
  • 8. Objectives, aims, areas and concepts of health psychology and its application in practice. Development of concepts and definitions of health. Bio-psycho-socio-environmental concept of health, global concept of health
  • 9. Risk and protective factors affecting the relationship between health and disease. Perceived social support as a protective factor
  • 10. Prevention and health promotion, health-promoting behaviours. Positive emotionality and health. Salutogenesis and health moderators. Relaxation techniques
  • 11. Psychological strain and stress. Causes, symptoms and consequences of stress. Taxonomy of stressful situations. Stress management (coping). Vulnerability and resilience. Overview of important concepts of psychological resistance. Personality traits influencing the response to stress
  • 12. Diseases and coping with them. Psychosomatics. Mental hygiene.
  • 13. Burn-out syndrome. Symptoms of the burn-out syndrome, burn-out process stage, risk and protective factors of burn-out
