Course objectives
The subject aims at making the students familiar with core knowledge and skills in the area of ethics and the paradigm of nursing as a scientific discipline. The student will get an overview of nursing thinking, conceptual models and theories. On completion of the course, the student will be able to orientate themselves in basic philosophical terms, ethical principles, professional codes and patient rights.
Syllabus
  • Subject matter - topics:
    Lectures, seminars and practicals in nursing ethics
    1. Basic concepts (ethics, morals, virtue, responsibility). Historical roots of health care ethics (Hippocratic oath), ethical principles in health care.
    2. Bioethics. Autonomy and respect for life. ´Telling the truth´ issues at the bedside.
    3. Ethics in nursing, the ICN Code of Ethics for Nurses. Ethical standards in nursing.
    4. Ethical principles in research, ethical committees, informed consent and advance directives.
    5. Ethical dilemmas in health care (termination of pregnancy, transplants, transfusions, care of the terminally ill). Personal data processing and privacy.
    6. Pain and its dimensions. Thanatology. Death and dying and related ethical issues. Euthanasia and assisted suicide issues.
    7. Human rights and dignity of the patient, Declaration of Lisbon on the Rights of the Patient, The Cancer Patient Bill of Rights, rights of hospitalized children, rights of the critically ill and other codes related to the profession.

    2. Influence of schools of thoughts on the development of nursing theories. Basic philosophical concepts. Health as value. Altruism and helping behaviour.
    3. Influence of spirituality on the development of nursing philosophies, theories and conceptual models.
    4. Major historically significant nursing philosophies, theories and conceptual models (Nightingale, Peplau, Henderson, Abdellah, Wiedenbach, Hall, Travelbee, Barnadr, Adam, Orlando).

Teacher's information
Contact hours are based on consultation of selected topics. Non-contact hours are realized via an e-learning environment available at http://elearning.fvp.slu.cz/. At the website, students can use learning materials with on-line assignments. Credits are granted upon successful completion based on a written or oral assessment where the student demonstrates knowledge of compulsory and recommended literature and discusses their on-line assignments. The student can consult the mentor concerning independently studied topics, be it in person, in group sessions or via e-mail.
The credit is provided for compulsory and active participation of the student in seminars and practicals.
Guided self-study with continuous assessment of learning outcome criteria in the e-learning environment is required (mid-term tests, short essays).
Seminar paper (10 pages).
