Course objectives
The content of the lesson is to describe the origin, gradual formation and phasing of the EU up to the present day (ECSU, EEC, EURATOM, Act of the United Europe, Schengen Agreements, 4 freedoms, Maastricht Agreement, Amsterdam Agreement, Lisbon Treaty). Attention is paid to EU institutions, their creation, content of their activities and influence. Part of the subject is also a brief understanding of the legislative area (EU community law). The important content of the course is the analysis of individual EU policies, the genesis of the creation and operation of EU structural policy, with regard to social and regional policy, issues of monetary policy, the role of other policies, their powers - exclusive authority, shared and supporting authority of EU policies, the next part is devoted to external activities of the EU and, finally, the position of the Czech Republic in the EU (from application to entry).
Learning outcomes
Professional knowledge: The student will gain knowledge about the efforts to integrate Europe, knowledge about the history and formation of EU structures from the past to the present. Professional skills: the student is able to orient himself in the problems of the creation and formation of the EC/EU, in the competence of the EU institutions and their policies. General competence: The graduate meets the prerequisites of a middle management worker and his competences include mastering the issues of economic and political changes in Europe in the 20th and 21st centuries.

  • 1Historical context: Integration processes in Europe after World War II (Europe divided by the war) 2. Genesis of integration processes, theory of integration after World War II, degrees of integration 3. Bodies and institutions of the European Union and their scope (Council of the EU, European Commission, European Parliament, European Council, European Court of Justice, European Court of Auditors, European Central Bank, Economic and Social Committee, Committee of the Regions) 4. EU policies: general characteristics, emergence and formation, their scope 5. Selected EU policies (Internal Market) 6. Four freedoms: free movement of goods, persons, services and capital 7. Other policies: free movement of knowledge, EU economic policy 8. Monetary and foreign exchange policy, common currency 9. Employment policy 10. Cohesion policy, European structural funds 11. External activities of the EU (EU foreign and security policy, development and humanitarian aid, European Neighborhood Policy) 12. The Czech Republic and the EU, EU membership (genesis) 13. Summary, new EU directions in the 21st century.

Teacher's information
During the semester, students can use a total of 10 hours of face-to-face lectures, which include explanations of difficult and important parts of the curriculum. During continuous study, the student uses study support in addition to the study literature, problem points can be discussed during individual and group consultations (study support available here: https://elearning.slu.cz/course/view.php?id=849. For the knowledge exam compulsory literature, study support and contact lectures.The student can continuously consult the subjects studied via e-mail, individual or group consultations and the hours are determined by the teacher at the beginning of the semester, but according to the needs of the students, it is also available outside of the specified consultations by prior agreement.
