Course objectives
The course is conceived as a four-semester course whose aim is to provide the students with principal knowledge of Polish language which would then allow to manage common communication situations but also individual work with Polish text and finally also individual compositions of simpler texts. This aim corresponds to structure of lessons. The teaching of grammar will be supplemented by practical exercises which would reflect reached level. With respect to the fact that Polish is required not only in the frame of everyday communication, the attention will be paid also to managing of Polish linguistic terminology which would always correspond to given issue. The course does not presuppose any previous knowledge. Therefore, its aim is the introduction of Polish language to students (it means with its classification in the frame of Indo-European languages, with its development and relations to other Slavic languages and mainly with its phonetic system. The correct pronunciation will then be emphasised in the tutorials. This effort will be accompanied by corresponding grammar and building of word-stock on the basis of thematic circles.

  • 1. Introduction to study of Polish language
    2. Letter and phonetic system of Polish language - alphabet, diagraphs, soft and hard pronunciation of consonants ł, g, h, k
    3. Polish vowels ó, i and y, nasal vowels ą, ę, stress
    4. The Polish spelling rules
    5. Outline of parts of speech and basic grammatical category, Polish verb (classification and description) - conjugation of verbs być, mieć and verbs of the I class in present time
    6. Conjugation of verbs of II and III class in present time
    7. Conjugation of verbs of the I class ending in -ować and verbs of the III class ending in -em and -esz in present time
    8. Modal verbs móc, musieć
    9. Nouns (classification and description) - Polish cases and genders; plural formation of nouns of masculine gender denoting, non denoting persons
    10. Plural formation and the 1st case of nouns of feminine and neuter gender
    11. 1st and 4th case of nouns, 2nd case of masculine gender in singular and plural, 2nd case of feminine and neuter gender, 2nd case of names and possessive pronouns
    12. 3rd and 6th case of nouns in singular and plural
