Course objectives
The course discusses issues concerning the psychology of the ill and the handicapped. It gives an overview of selected mental and behavioural disorders requiring professional behaviour of the nursing staff. The obejctive of the course is to help students understand illness as a sui generis social abberation, teach students differential diagnosis of behavioural disorders, and assist the learner in understanding social pathology. Syllabus
  • Lectures:
    1. Illness as a psychological issue
    2. Psychological issues of selected neurological disorders
    3. Psychological issues in clients with physical disabilities and sensory impairments
    4. Psychological issues in clients with itellectual disabilities
    5. Dementia and its psychological impact on clients and their relatives
    6. Pervasive developmental disorders (autism spectrum)
    7. Affective disorders (depression), mood disorders
    8. Neurotic disorders (anxiety, phobia)
    Practical sessions:
    1. Eating disorders (anorexia and bulimia)
    2. Suicidal behaviour
    3. Personality disorders, aggressive behaviour
    4. Psychospiritual crisis
    5. Addictions, psychoactive substances, alcohol and other drugs of abuse, gambling
    6. Social pathology (child maltreatment, woman battering, cult involvement, homelessness, psychological aspects in penology)
    7. Psychological deprivation
    8. Behavioural disorders in childhood
