- Course objectives
- The course is intended for basic orientation in the field of social work with persons of the status of applicants for international protection, asylum grantees or members of ethnic or subcultural groups. The aim of the course is to provide good information about the needs of migration, the waves of migration, and immigration policies. In addition, students will become familiar with the international, the EU and the Czech legislation relating to migration, refugees, international protection and asylum. The subject acquaints students with a selection of approaches to social work with defined groups, both in state institutions, i.e. those established by the Ministry of Interior of the Czech Republic, and in non-governmental institutions of the non-profit sector. Most attention is paid to the reasons leading to migration, refugees' position in society, defining their basic physical, social and psychological needs, which may be provided by social work. After finishing the course, students will be well informed on the basic inter-cultural differences in direct interaction with the client from a different ethnic and cultural environment. Students will be able to realize the need for cultural sensitivity, risks of egocentric behaviour, prejudices and stereotypes. Study Outcomes: Professional Knowledge: Students can define and realize the basic concepts of inter-cultural communication, and the specific work with individuals from different cultural environments. Students can describe the dangers of cultural shock and the way it may be eliminated, they know the basic factors of various non-verbal communications from various socio-cultural environments. They also know basic refugee and migration legislation of the Czech Republic and of the European Union. Professional Skills: Students can properly communicate with persons from various ethnic and cultural environment with great cultural sensitivity. They can describe the individual steps of the asylum procedure and the state integration programme and properly advise potential clients. General Qualification: Students understand the cultural or ethnic diversification of the society as an advantage in the globalized world. They are able to deal with the sensed dangers of cultural prejudice or stereotypes, and with the dangers of discrimination.

Seminar
The seminars are based on the issues of social work discussed in the lectures, which are dealt with in the forms of case studies. Student will be assigned tasks to create the case according to the assigned issue as follows: case history creation, diagnosis, defining the methods of social services or social work, describing a real provider of social services, including the description of the founder and financing, creation of a time-line of social assistance and feedback on the solution to the problem.
