Course objectives
The aim of this course is to provide students with the latest knowledge in the field of nursing care of a physiologic newborn and with classification of newborns. The course describes care of newborns, basic terminology, priorities of perinatal care, WHO recommendations for care of newborns, main initiatives of Zdraví 21 (Health 21) programme. Having finished the course, the students orientate themselves in basic care of newborns, nursing assessment using nursing anamnesis methods, in planning and assessing of care. Learning outcomes: Professional knowledge: The students are able to describe and explain individual aspects of care of newborns with an emphasis on care of a physiological newborn. Professional skills: The students are able to use rightly chosen method of nursing assessment/anamnesis to assess the condition of a newborn, further they are able to plan care - to establish diagnoses, to determine expected results (goals, criteria), interventions in selected statuses, they can assess the care process. General ability: The students are able to decide independently and to choose procedures in the care of a newborn, in the education of child's mother/parents conscientiously. Competence: They provide nursing care of physiological newborns by means of the nursing process method in the extent set by the competence of a nurse and under supervision of a midwife / a specialist in care of children.
Syllabus
  • Lectures:
    1. Physiological newborn - basic terminology, factors affecting perinatal results.
    2. Newborn classification - pathological, high-risk, hypotrophic newborns, postterm newborns.
    3. WHO recommendations for newborn care - holistic care focused on family, initiatives of Zdraví 21 programme.
    4. Nursing assessment of newborn's somatic signs.
    5. Newborn's needs from the holistic point of view.
    6. Nursing anamnesis/assessment of a newborn.
    7. Planning and assessment of care of a newborn.
    Seminars and practical sessions:
    1. Assessment methods of a physiological newborn - an interview with child's mother, monitoring, physical examination, screening of a newborn.
    2. Interventions during the first treatment of a newborn after the delivery, the first contact with the mother, rooming-in.
    3. Interventions during treatment of a newborn in the first week after its birth.
    4. Assessment methods of a general medical condition of a newborn - needs for a holistic approach
    5. Standard plans of care of selected statuses - diagnostics, expected results (goals, criteria), nursing interventions, assessment.
    6. Nursing documents in the care of a physiological newborn, managing records, hardcopy/electronic form.

Teacher's information
Credit requirements: processing of a selected topic / assessment of a newborn in the extent of 5-7 pages and a plea for it. A knowledge test for 30-40 min, a part of lecture notes.
