Course objectives
The course is based on theoretical lessons. It expands on medical knowledge relevant to clinical nursing care. The course places emphasis on preventive care of hearing and prevention of serious hearing impairments. Additionally, the course provides an overview of selected clinical conditions and specific features of multidisciplinary care of persons with hearing impairments and ear disease in secondary and tertiary care settings. Learning outcomes: Professional knowledge: The student demonstrates knowledge of ENT disorders, of the care of ENT patients and of hearing impairments. They are able to describe the anatomy and functioning of ENT organs, as well as common surgical interventions in otolaryngology. Professional skills: The student is able to provide professional nursing care to ENT patients. They are able to co-operate with patients who suffer from hearing impairments. General ability: The student is able to provide adequate nursing care in the specialty. Competence: The student is ready to take care of ENT patients in outpatient and inpatients settings and in the community.
Syllabus
  • 1. Primary care: health promotion and prevention in otolaryngology, basic ENT examination. Secondary care: diagnostic procedures and testing in ENT. Tertiary care, its organization and services based on the needs of ENT patients.
    2. Diseases of the outer ear (infections, tumors, trauma). Diseases of the middle ear (infections, congenital abnormalities, degenerative changes, trauma). Diseases of the inner ear (infections, tumors, degenerative changes, movement and balance disorders, Meni?re syndrome).
    3. Hearing loss (causes, therapeutic approaches and compensatory devices, cochlear implants, communication with persons with auditory impairments, social impact of hearing impairments). Diseases of the nose and paranasal sinuses (rhinitis, polyps, foreign bodies, epistaxis, trauma, sinusitis).
    4. Diseases of the larynx (laryngitis, tumors, total laryngectomy, rehabilitation and communication training after laryngectomy, esophageal speech). Diseases of the throat (pharyngitis, diphtheria, tonsillitis, adenotonsillectomy, epiglotitis, foreign body in the upper respiratory tract, peripheral sleep apnea).
    5. NP (nursing process) in patients/clients with diseases of the outer and middle ear.
    6. NP in patients/clients with hearing impairments.
    7. NP in patients/clients with diseases of the larynx.
    8. NP in patients with diseases of the throat. NP in dysphagia patients.

Teacher's information
Attendance in a minimum of 80 per cent of seminars is required for completion. Students who could not attend a number of lessons for serious reasons will be assigned extra tasks.
Credit test, a minimum of 80 per cent of correct answers are required.
