Course objectives
The course aim is to provide knowledge in the field of gerontosociology, or social gerontology. The intention of the discipline is to understand the complexity of final developmental stages of life.
Syllabus
  • 1. Gerontology-definition, subject, tasks, system, relationship to other sciences. The content and meaning of gerontosociology.
    2. The definition of old age and ageing, chronological and functional age. Individual ageing.
    3. Gerontosociological theories of old age and ageing.
    4. Population ageing - demographic aspects of ageing and old age. The economic, health, social and family context of ageing of the Czech society.
    5. Social integration and autonomy of seniors. Myths about old age.
    6. The issue of self-reliance and dependency in old age. Risky situations and risky persons in the population of seniors.
    7. Ethical aspects of the care of the elderly.
    8. Forms of preparation for old age. A second life program. Activities and social contacts of seniors. Forms and alternatives to an active old age.
    9. Social ties in old age, intergenerational relationships. Problems of the socialization of the personality of elderly people, integration into social groups.
    10. Ageism, elder abuse. Multiplicity of losses in old age.
    11. Selected chapters of Thanatology. An interdisciplinary approach to the issue of death and dying. Palliative and hospice care. Mourning in old age.

Teacher's information
Within the set deadlines students will do three selected corresponding tasks from educational books and send them to the teacher.
Students will also do a seminar paper in the range of at least seven pages using at least three professional resources on a selected topic related to the course content (e.g. a theme from mentioned areas, a content of a specialized monograph, professional experience, processing of a case report of people of senior age - relationships, activities, autonomy, social risks etc.) with the emphasis on the social aspects of old age and aging.
When completing the course processed corresponding tasks of the study support of the subject and the content of the semester work will be discussed (available one week before the examination).
