Course Enrolment Limitations
The course is offered to students of any study field.
Course objectives
The objective of the course is to provide prospective educators with a body of information on special pedagogy. Students will get an overview of a variety of disabilities and impairments, as well as issues related to the inclusion of handicapped persons in the system of special education or individual training programmes. Further, the lectures provide information on different diciplines in special education, disability diagnostics, therapy and prevention. At the end of the course, students should: understand key terms in special education, be able to diagnose specific personality traits and individual behaviour in clients with various types and severity of disability, understand basic principles and approaches in case management of clients with special needs. Emphasis is placed on practical utility of special educational competence.
Syllabus
  • Lessons:
    1. Special pedagogy as a science, its status in the present world, a short history of the discipline, its aims and content, relation to other sciences
    2. Key terms in special education. Humans and disabilities. Branches of special pedagogy
    3. Specific interventions in respective branches: speech-language pathology/logopedics, instruction of the physically disabled/somatopedics, instruction of the hearing impaired/surdopedics, instruction of the visually impaired/tyflopedics and ophthalmopedics
    4. Multiple disabilities, specific learning disabilities
    5. Diagnostic process in special pedagogy, therapy in clinical practice
    6. Inclusive practices - current status, implications of societal attitudes
    7. Comprehensive rehabilitation
    8. Social Services Act of 2006. Respite care. Supported employment
    9. Volunteering. Survey of issues in special education
    10. Submission of students´ papers. Testing
